BC3.1 Conditions of long-term business visas/permits (26/07/1999)

The conditions of the long-term business visa/permit are that the holder will be self-employed and undertakes not to draw on the New Zealand welfare system. A permit holder's drawing on the welfare system may lead to revocation of their permit.

BC3.1.1 Definition of self-employment

  1. Self-employment is lawful active involvement in the management and operating of a business in New Zealand which the principal applicant has established or purchased, or in which the principal applicant has made a substantial investment.

    Note: Substantial investment is defined as the purchase of 25% or more of the shareholding of a business.

  2. For the avoidance of doubt, self-employment does not include involvement of a passive or speculative nature.

BC3.1.5 Conditions specified on visas/permits

The conditions specified on the visa/permit are that the visa/permit will be for work:

  • As: Self-employed
  • For: Own business
  • At: New Zealand

Note: These conditions are in addition to those set out in BC3.1 above.
