V3.85 Players on tour or competing in tournaments (26/07/1999)

Immigration Regulations 1999 sch 1

  1. Sports players undertaking short-term engagements of no longer than 3 months such as tours or tournaments, who are from countries whose nationals are not required to hold a visitor's visa (see E2.1), may be granted a visitor's permit on arrival in New Zealand.
  2. Sports players from countries whose nationals are required to hold a visitor's visa must apply for a visa.
  3. Sports players undertaking short-term engagements such as tours or tournaments are exempt from having to hold a work permit for up to 3 months from their date of arrival.
  4. Sports players who wish to tour or compete in a tournament in New Zealand for more than 3 months must apply for a work visa or permit.

V3.85.1 Support staff of players on tour or competing in tournaments

  1. Support staff of players on tour or competing in tournaments may be issued with visitors' visas or granted visitors' permits on the same basis as players in V3.85 above.
  2. Visa or immigration officers must be satisfied that such support staff are essential to the success of the tour or tournament. Support staff who may be considered essential to the success of the tour or tournament include but are not limited to persons filling roles such as:
    • coach
    • team manager
    • fitness advisor
    • physiotherapist
    • doctor.
  3. Support staff of players whose tour or tournament in New Zealand lasts more than 3 months must also apply for a work visa or permit.
