P5.1 Applications (26/07/1999)

  1. Participants may be issued with temporary visas and granted temporary permits for the length of their exchange.
  2. Before issuing a visa or granting a permit, visa and immigration officers should:
    1. be satisfied that applicants have met the lodgement and health and character requirements for the appropriate temporary visa/permit; and
    2. sight evidence of acceptance to an approved, government-to-government or private exchange scheme from the scheme organiser; and
    3. sight evidence that applicants have medical and dental insurance cover for the length of the exchange (except for student participants).
  3. If participants arrive in New Zealand without a visa, immigration officers may grant a work or student permit for the maximum period of stay for their scheme, provided that:
    1. there are special reasons why they have not obtained a visa, and
    2. they meet the lodgement and health and character requirements.
