WI4.1 The need to meet the requirements of Generic Temporary Entry policy (29/04/2002)
As well as meeting the specific requirements for the relevant working holiday scheme, applicants must also meet the requirements under Generic Temporary Entry Policy.
WI4.1.1 General conditions
- Under the working holiday schemes, young citizens of approved countries may travel to New Zealand for a holiday and undertake employment during their stay.
- To be eligible for a work visa and permit under these schemes, applicants must:
- be aged no less than 18 and no more than 30, and not be accompanied by children, and
- provide evidence of sufficient funds to purchase return travel.
- Applicants are not required to provide evidence of a job offer.
- Applicants approved entry under the working holiday schemes are to be issued with multiple work visas. Work visas may be endorsed ‘outward passage waived’ where visa officers are satisfied from evidence provided that applicants have sufficient funds to provide for their own maintenance and to purchase an outward travel ticket at the end of their working holiday.
- Holders of such permits:
- are not eligible to come to New Zealand for any further working holiday under the scheme, and
- must not undertake permanent employment unless they apply for and obtain a work permit that enables this as provided by WI4.1.5 below.
WI4.1.5 Ability to change status
- Once in New Zealand holders of such permits may, at any time during the currency of that permit, apply to change their status to that of:
- a long-term temporary worker, or
- a student, or
- a resident, and will be considered under those immigration policies relevant to the type of permit applied for.
WI4.1.10 Ability to apply in New Zealand
- Working holiday visa applicants applying under the Canada, Netherlands, Malaysia or Singapore schemes may apply at any NZIS branch in NZ providing that they:
- are the holder of a student or visitor permit,
- have been in New Zealand for 12 months or less; and
- meet the general conditions of the scheme under which they are applying.
