Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa

You can apply for this visa if you have children or grandchildren who are New Zealand citizens or residents. It allows you to travel in and out of New Zealand to visit your family.

To apply you must:

  • intend to visit children or grandchildren who are New Zealand citizens or residents
  • be sponsored by your child or grandchild, or the parent of your child or grandchild
  • be living outside New Zealand
  • agree to pay for your own health care
  • meet the other requirements of this visa.

This visa lets you:

  • visit your children and grandchildren in New Zealand
  • travel in and out of New Zealand
  • include your partner in your visa application.

You can only apply for this visa while you are outside of New Zealand.

You cannot include dependent children in your visa application — they need to apply for their own visas.

You must not plan to work in New Zealand on this visa, unless you work remotely for a business overseas.

The general Visitor Visa has similar visa conditions and fewer requirements to meet.

How long you can stay

With this visa you can stay in New Zealand for up to 6 months at a time, with a maximum total stay of 18 months in 3 years.

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

Who can apply

To apply for this visa you must:

  • have children or grandchildren who are New Zealand citizens or residents
  • be sponsored by your child or grandchild, or the parent of your child or grandchild
  • be living outside New Zealand
  • be in good health
  • be of good character
  • have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand
  • if bringing your partner, have evidence of your relationship, and of their good health and character
  • pay for any health care or medical assistance you receive while in New Zealand. 

Sponsorship

You must be sponsored by your child or grandchild, or, if they are younger than 18, by their parent.

Your sponsor must:

  • be a New Zealand citizen or resident
  • provide a certified copy of their New Zealand passport, birth certificate or certificate of citizenship, or New Zealand Resident Visa, or Australian passport
  • be your child or grandchild, or their parent, if your child or grandchild is aged 17 or younger — and provide evidence of this relationship, for example, birth certificate, adoption papers or household registration papers
  • meet our requirements for acceptable sponsors
  • not be sponsoring anyone else.

If your sponsor is the parent of your child or grandchild, and not your child, you must provide evidence of the sponsor’s relationship to your child or grandchild.

Paying for health care

You or your sponsor will need to pay for any health care or medical assistance you may need in New Zealand.

We recommend you have full medical insurance for your stay.

If you are pregnant, there are additional requirements.

Note

Some people may be eligible for public health care.

Who can get public health care

Bringing your partner 

To bring your partner on this visa, you must provide proof of:

  • your relationship with your partner, for example, a marriage or civil union certificate or joint mail sent to a shared address with your partner
  • your partner's identity, good character and good health.

Health

You must be in good health.

To apply for this visa you will need to have a chest X-ray and a medical examination and provide evidence with your application, unless you have previously provided medical certificates to us and those certificates were issued in the last 36 months.

Evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination must be less than 3 months old when we receive it.

Citizens of India applying from India

If you have a medical condition, you should apply for your visa at least 4 months before you intend to travel to New Zealand as it will take longer to process your application.

Character

You must be of good character.

You may need to provide police certificates as proof of your good character.

If you have a criminal conviction, or are a security risk to New Zealand, we might not give you a visa.

You must provide police certificates that are less than 6 months old when you apply, if:

  • you are aged 17 or older, and
  • your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer — this includes time you spent in New Zealand in the past on other visas.

You must get police certificates from:

  • countries you are a citizen of, and
  • countries you have spent more than 5 years in since you turned 17.

You do not need to provide police certificates if you provided them with an earlier visa application and they were issued in the last 24 months.

If we ask for a new police certificate when processing your application, you will need to send us a new one.

If you have previously spent 6 months or longer in New Zealand, but have not provided a police certificate from your home country before, you must provide one with this application.

Genuine intentions

You must have genuine reasons for coming to New Zealand.

When deciding whether your intentions are genuine, we will consider all the information that:

  • you provide to support your application
  • we have about your personal circumstances
  • you have previously given to us.

You must intend to visit your children or grandchildren in New Zealand, and they must intend to be in New Zealand when you visit. 

Documents you need

When you apply

When you apply, you will need to provide:

  • a copy of your passport or — if you apply on paper, you can provide a , but we can usually process your visa application faster if you provide the original
  • 1 acceptable photo if you apply online, or 2 photos if you apply using paper forms
  • evidence of a chest X-ray, if required
  • evidence of a medical examination, if required
  • proof of your relationship to your sponsor
  • a copy of the completed Sponsorship Form for Temporary Entry
  • police certificates, if required
  • translated versions of all your documents if they are not in English.

If you are bringing your partner with you, you will also need to provide evidence of your relationship, and your partner's identity, health and character.

Your passport or certificate of identity must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand.

Alert

You may not be allowed to check in to your flight if your passport is close to expiring. Check that it will not expire while you are in New Zealand or close to when you plan to leave New Zealand.

  • evidence of a medical examination or chest X-ray if you have not already provided these
  • police certificates as proof of your good character.

 

When you arrive

When you arrive, you may need to provide evidence of your travel plans to leave New Zealand, depending on your visa conditions.

    Get documents translated

    For your application you must provide:

    • certified English translations of any documents that are not in English
    • scanned copies of the original documents.

    Documents must be translated by someone who meets our requirements for providing English translations.

    Organise proof of identity, citizenship and age

    If you need a new passport, allow yourself enough time to get it.

    When you apply, make sure you enter your identity details exactly as they appear on your passport or certificate of identity.

    If there are any mistakes in your identity details, your application may be delayed. We may also decline your application or refuse you entry to New Zealand.

    Make sure your photos are acceptable for a New Zealand visa.

    Book your medical appointments

    You will need to book an appointment for a chest X-ray and medical examination.

    • reference code from the clinic submitting your health information
    • name of the clinic submitting your health information, if there is no eMedical reference code, or
    • the medical certificate and chest X-ray certificate, if the clinic gave these to you.

    Apply for police certificates, if required

    To apply online, log in to your account or set up an account if you do not have one already.

    If you are already in New Zealand, you must have a valid visa. If your current temporary visa is going to expire while you are waiting for our decision, we will normally issue you an Interim Visa to let you stay in New Zealand lawfully.

    Step 3: Complete the application form

    Complete the application form and attach all supporting documents.

    As you are being sponsored to visit New Zealand, your sponsor will need to have completed a sponsorship form.

    Step 4: Submit your application and pay the fee

    You can take your application to a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or post it to them.

    Step 5: Wait for our decision

    If we need more information to process your application, we will let you know.

How to pay and submit

When you get your visa

You must come to New Zealand within 12 months of the date your visa is given.

Your visa is valid from the date you enter New Zealand, if you are outside of New Zealand when we approve your application

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.

When you arrive

Entry permission

You must apply for permission to enter New Zealand. You do this by completing a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) form.

You can start your digital declaration any time, but the earliest you can submit it is 24 hours before starting your travel to New Zealand.

A paper declaration form is available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

Arriving in New Zealand

Alert

You can be refused entry permission if you:

  • are not a genuine visitor
  • do not meet our character requirements
  • have had a change in circumstances since we issued your visa
  • refuse to let us take your photo, fingerprints or an iris scan
  • cannot provide evidence of any onward travel or the money required to leave New Zealand.

While you are in New Zealand

Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa. 

Travel

You can travel in and out of New Zealand multiple times for up to 3 years. 

You can stay for up to 6 months at a time, up to a maximum total stay of 18 months in 3 years.

Work

You cannot in New Zealand on this visa, however, you may be able to or work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand.
