Partner of an NZ Scholarship Student Work Visa

This visa allows you to work in New Zealand while your partner is here on an MFAT-funded NZ Scholarship.

To apply you must:

  • be the partner of someone with an MFAT-funded New Zealand Scholarship Visa 
  • be living with your partner in a genuine and stable relationship
  • have a partner who is eligible to support your application
  • have at least NZD $4,200 to pay your living expenses 
  • meet the other requirements of this visa. 

This visa lets you:

  • join your partner in New Zealand
  • work during your stay
  • study for up to 3 months
  • travel in and out of New Zealand.

You cannot include dependent children in your visa application, but they can apply for visas based on their relationship to you.

You do not need to have a job offer to apply.

You will not be eligible for this visa if your partner was given their visa to take part in New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships or New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarships.

You will not be eligible for another temporary visa for the 2-year period after your partner completes their scholarship without written approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), with the exception of a short-term visitor visa.

Identity

You must provide proof of your identity.

Note

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave New Zealand:

    • 1 acceptable photo if you apply online, or 2 photos if you use a paper application form
    • your passport or

If you apply online, you must upload a copy of your passport when you apply. We will let you know if you need to send your passport after you have applied.

If you submit a paper application, provide your original passport or a certified copy.  We can usually process your application faster if you provide your original passport.

Citizens of China applying from China

Also provide your:

  • Hukou (household registration book)
  • Chinese identity card.

If you are a citizen of China and you are submitting a paper application form in China, you must also complete a supplementary form.

Applicants from Hong Kong or Macao applying within Hong Kong or Macao

Also provide a copy of your identity card.

If you are submitting a paper application form, you must provide a supplementary form for Hong Kong and Macao visitors, workers and students.

Health

You must be in good health.

We may ask you to have a chest X-ray, a medical examination or both as proof of your good health.

If you are staying less than:

  • 6 months you do not normally need a chest X-ray
  • 12 months you do not normally need a medical certificate. 

Who needs an X-ray or medical examination    

When we process your application we let you know if we need you to have a chest X-ray or medical examination.

Applicants from China, Hong Kong or Macao applying within China, Hong Kong or Macao

You must provide a chest X-ray completed in the last 3 months, even if you have provided one to us previously, if:

  • you have spent 6 months in a row in China since the last X-ray certificate was issued, and
  • you are now coming to New Zealand for more than 6 months.

Character

You must be of good character.

If you have a criminal conviction or are a security risk to New Zealand we may not be able to grant you a visa.

You must provide police certificates if your total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or longer across all visits. This includes any time you have spent in New Zealand in the past on other visas, even if you have been out of the country since then.

You also must provide police certificates if we ask for them.

Police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you submit your application. They must be from any country you are a citizen of, or have spent more than 5 years in since you turned 17.

If you are 16 years old or younger you do not need to provide police certificates.

How to get a police certificate

If you have already sent us police certificates with a previous visa application and they are less than 24 months old, you do not need to send them again.

Genuine intentions

You must genuinely intend to meet the conditions of your visa.

When we decide if your intentions are genuine, we consider all the information:

  • you provide to support your application
  • we have about your personal circumstances
  • you provided in any previous applications.

Your relationship with your partner

You and your partner must be living together in a genuine and stable relationship.

You must provide evidence that you and your partner are living together in a

Your evidence should show:

  • how long you have been together
  • how long you have been living together
  • that you share finances and other responsibilities
  • that you spend time together, for example photos together, emails and social media conversations between you
  • that other people recognise your relationship
  • anything else you think shows you and your partner are living together in a genuine and stable relationship.

Eligible New Zealand supporting partner

Your partner must be eligible to support your application.

Your partner must complete a 'Form for Partners Supporting Partnership-Based Temporary Entry Applications' as evidence of their support.

Your partner's character

Your partner must be of good character.

Your partner must meet our good character requirements or be granted a character waiver. We may ask your partner to provide a police certificate from any country they have spent 12 months or more in over the last 10 years. This applies whether the time was spent in one or more visits.

Your partner will not meet our character requirements if they have any convictions for domestic violence or sexual offences. If your partner does not meet our character requirements, we will consider whether they are eligible for a character waiver.

Note

For you to be granted a visa on the basis of your partnership, your partner must meet our good character requirements or be granted a character waiver.

Your partner will not meet our good character requirements if, in the last 7 years, they have been convicted of any offence:

    • involving domestic violence
    • of a sexual nature.

Your partner's visa

Your partner must have an MFAT-funded NZ Scholarship Student Visa.

We will check our records for evidence your partner holds an MFAT-funded NZ Scholarship Student Visa.

Funds

You must have enough money to live on while you are in New Zealand.

You must have at least NZD $4,200 for your stay. Evidence can include:

  • bank statements
  • credit card statements
  • bank drafts
  • traveller's cheques.

How to pay and submit

When you arrive

Entry permission

You must apply for permission to enter New Zealand. You do this by completing a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) form.

You can start your digital declaration any time, but the earliest you can submit it is 24 hours before starting your travel to New Zealand.

A paper declaration form is available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

Arriving in New Zealand

Alert

You can be refused entry permission if you:

  • are not a genuine visitor
  • do not meet our character requirements
  • have had a change in circumstances since we issued your visa
  • refuse to let us take your photo, fingerprints or an iris scan
  • cannot provide evidence of any onward travel or funds required by the conditions of your visa.

While you are in New Zealand

These are the conditions that you must meet once you have your visa. Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa.

Travel

After you arrive, you can travel in and out of New Zealand as many times as you like before your visa expires.

Funds

You must have enough money to live on while in New Zealand.

Work

You can work in any employment you like, as long as:

  • the work you do is legal
  • you do not provide commercial sexual services
  • you do not invest or operate in a business that provides commercial sexual services
  • you have any occupational registration that is needed to do that work in New Zealand.

Occupational registration

Study

You can study for up to 3 months.

Visa expiry

You must leave New Zealand before your visa expires.
