This visa lets you:

  • live, work and study in New Zealand
  • include your partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger in your visa application.

How long you can stay

A Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa lets you stay in New Zealand indefinitely.

After you have had this visa for 2 years in a row, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa that lets you travel in and out of New Zealand indefinitely.

Who can apply

To apply for this visa, you must:

  • be aged 55 or younger
  • have an offer of, or be working in, a skilled job with an accredited employer
  • have 6 skilled resident points from your skills and work in New Zealand
  • be in good health
  • be of good character
  • have a genuine relationship with your partner and dependent children, if including them
  • must speak and understand English.

Age

You must be aged 55 or younger when you apply.

We check your identity document to confirm your age.

Current job or job offer

You must be working in a skilled job, or have a job offer for one.

To be considered a skilled job, it must be:

  • with an
  • either in an Level 1 to 3 occupation and paid at or above the or in an ANZSCO Level 4 to 5 occupation and paid at or above 1.5 times the median wage.
  • and
  • permanent or fixed-term for at least 12 months, or a contract or continuous contracts for at least 6 months.

The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANSCO) list grades jobs according to skill level. ANZSCO skill levels range from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most skilled and 5 being less skilled.

Protecting yourself from immigration scams

Documents you can provide include:

  • your employment agreement, fixed term contract or employment offer letter from an accredited employer — it must show your hours, duration of employment, position and pay
  • contract or contracts (without breaks) adding to 6 months or more.

If you have a contract for services, you must have proof that you have:

  • a history of contract work, and
  • completed 12 months of skilled work experience in New Zealand.

You cannot claim points for a skilled job or job offer. Check the following section for what you can claim points for.

Skilled resident points

Skilled resident points are the points you need to be eligible to apply for a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa.

You need at least 6 skilled resident points from your skills and work in New Zealand. 

If you are invited to apply, you will need to provide evidence that you qualify for the points you are claiming.

You can claim:

  • 3 to 6 points from 1 skill category — either your New Zealand occupational registration, qualifications or income, and
  • up to 3 more points from skilled work experience, if required.

You can use your occupational registration to claim points if it is on our list of eligible New Zealand occupational registrations.

Claiming skilled resident points from occupational registration

Registrations that require more training are worth more points. You can claim:

  • 6 points — if a minimum of 6 years of experience, training or both are required to gain registration
  • 5 points — if a minimum of 5 years of experience, training or both are required to gain registration
  • 4 points — if a minimum of 4 years of experience, training or both are required to gain registration
  • 3 points — if a minimum of 2 years of experience, training or both are required to gain registration.
Claiming points for skilled work experience in New Zealand

If you do not have 6 points from your occupational registration, you can use your skilled work experience in New Zealand to claim more points — you cannot use your qualifications or income to claim more points.

If you are planning to use skilled work experience to claim more points, you can only include skilled work experience you gained after getting your occupational registration.

Evidence of occupational registration

If you are invited to apply for residence, you will need evidence that you have a New Zealand registration that qualifies for points. 

The evidence must show:

  • the registration licensing or certification authority
  • the registration, licence, or certificate name and scope of practice, and
  • that you meet the 'requirements to claim points' listed for your registration — check the tool for claiming skilled resident points from occupational registration.

Qualification

You can use your qualification to claim points if it:

  • is a New Zealand qualification recognised on the
  • has had an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the (NZQA), or
  • is on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA).

You can claim between 3 to 6 points depending on the highest level of qualification you have.

New Zealand qualifications and international qualifications with a New Zealand equivalent

If you have a New Zealand qualification or your IQA confirms your qualification has a New Zealand equivalent, you can claim:

  • 6 points — for a level 10 Doctoral degree
  • 5 points — for a level 9 Master's degree
  • 4 points — for a level 8 Bachelor Honour's degree or Postgraduate diploma, or
  • 3 points — for a level 8 Postgraduate certificate or level 7 Bachelor's degree.
International qualifications without a New Zealand equivalent

If your IQA does not confirm your qualification is equivalent to a New Zealand qualification, but it recognises your qualification on the NZQF, you can still claim:

  • 5 points — for a level 10 qualification
  • 4 points — for a level 9 qualification, or
  • 3 points — for a level 8 qualification.
Non-degree qualifications

You cannot claim points for a non-degree qualification at level 7 or below.

Evidence of qualification

If you are invited to apply for residence, you will need to provide:

  • a copy of your qualification certificate and course transcripts, and
  • your IQA results, if you needed an assessment.

If you have recently completed your level 10 Doctoral degree (PhD) in New Zealand, you can provide a letter from your university stating you have met the requirements to graduate. You do not need to provide your degree certificate if you do not have it yet.

Note

If you need an assessment, you must provide the IQA reference number when you submit your expression of interest.

You do not need an IQA if your qualification is on the List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA).

Claiming skilled resident points from occupational registration

If you do not have 6 points from your qualifications, you can use your skilled work experience in New Zealand to claim more points — you cannot use your occupational registration or income to claim more points.

Income

You can use the income from your current New Zealand job or job offer to claim points, if the income from the job is at least 1.5 times the  

You can claim:

  • 6 points — if the job is at 3 times the median wage (currently NZD $94.83 an hour) or more
  • 4 points — if the job is at 2 times the median wage (currently NZD $63.22 an hour) or more
  • 3 points — if the job is at 1.5 times the median wage (currently NZD $47.41 an hour) or more.

The median wage is updated every year.

 

If your remuneration is based on an annual salary, you will need to calculate your rate based on the hours you work per week.

Claiming points for skilled work experience in New Zealand

If you do not have 6 points from your income, you can use your skilled work experience in New Zealand to claim more points — you cannot use your occupational registration or qualifications to claim more points.

If you are planning to use skilled work experience in New Zealand to claim more points, you must show that you met the wage threshold throughout the skilled work experience period.

Example

You are claiming 4 points for being paid 2 times the median wage. You need to claim 2 more points from skilled work experience to add up to 6 points.

To claim 2 points from skilled work experience, you must:

  • have been paid 2 times the median wage (in effect at the time) during your 2 years of skilled work experience in New Zealand
  • provide evidence that you met the wage threshold at both the beginning and end of your skilled work experience period.

Evidence of income

Documents you can provide include:

  • your employment agreement, fixed-term contract or employment offer letter from an accredited employer — it must show your hours, duration of employment, position and pay
  • contract or contracts (without breaks) adding up to 6 months or more.

Note

If you intended to apply for the Highly Paid Residence Visa, you can apply for the Skilled Migrant Category Residence Visa instead and claim points from your income.

Skilled work experience

You can claim 1 point for each year of skilled work experience you have in New Zealand, up to a maximum of 3 points.

You will need to claim more points from your New Zealand occupational registration, qualification or income to get the minimum of 6 points.

Skilled work requirements

The skilled work experience must be in a job. 

There is also a wage threshold depending on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations ( level of your job.

  • If your job has an ANZSCO level of 1 to 3 you must have been paid the or above.
  • If your job has an ANZSCO level of 4 to 5 you must have been paid 1.5 times the median wage or above.

Wage rates for work visas

For skilled work experience in New Zealand, you can claim:

  • 3 points — for 3 years of skilled work experience during the 5 years before you apply
  • 2 points — for 2 years of skilled work experience during the 4 years before you apply
  • 1 point — for 1 year of skilled work experience during the 2 years before you apply.

Note

If you took an extended period of leave during your skilled work experience period, you may still be able to include this time if it was for parental leave, ACC leave or sick leave.

If the median wage changed during your work experience

You must have met the wage threshold at the beginning of the skilled work experience period you are claiming points for. 

If the median wage increased during your skilled work experience period, your income did not need to increase, as long as you stayed in the same job. If you had changed jobs, you must have met the new wage threshold applicable at that time.

Evidence of your work experience

If you are invited to apply for residence, you will need to provide:

  • your previous and current employment agreements
  • the job descriptions for any roles you are claiming points from
  • a summary of earnings or a tax statement (for work on a contract for services) from Inland Revenue that confirms the period of work and any income over that period.

The evidence you provide must show your occupation, hours and pay.

Health

You, and anyone else included in your application, must be in good health.

You, and anyone else included aged 15 or older, must complete a chest X-ray and medical examination.

Dependent children included in your application and aged:

  • 10 or younger, must get a medical examination, but do not need a chest X-ray unless we or your ask for one
  • 11 to 14, must get a medical examination and a chest X-ray, but only need a blood test if we or your panel physician ask for one.

 

If you have provided medical certificates to us before and those certificates were issued within the last 3 years, you may not need to provide them again.

Note

Evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination must be less than 3 months old when we receive it.

Character

You, and anyone else included in your application, must be of good character.

If you, and anyone else included, are aged 17 or older, you must provide police certificates that are less than 6 months old when you apply.

If you have a criminal conviction, or are a security risk to New Zealand, we might not give you a visa.

You must get police certificates from:

  • countries you are a citizen of, and
  • countries where you have spent 12 months or more in over the last 10 years — even if those 12 months were not all in one stay.

Police certificates must show any criminal records you have had at any time in any of these countries — not only in the last 10 years.

If we ask for a new police certificate when processing your application, you will need to send us a new one.

Note

Your police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you submit your application. Allow yourself enough time to get these certificates.

Partner and dependent children

If you include your partner and dependent children in your application, you must have a genuine relationship with them.
You need to provide documents — like marriage and birth certificates — that prove your relationship to your partner and dependent children aged 24 or younger.

If your partner or dependent children already have, or are applying for, a work, student or visitor visa based on their relationship to you, you must include them in your residence application.

English language

You must speak and understand English.

There are 2 ways to show us you speak and understand English – through:

  • your citizenship, where you studied and the qualifications you gained
  • English language tests.

The results of your English language test must:

  • meet the minimum score we set
  • be no more than 2 years old when you apply.

Note

When we assess your application, we may ask for more proof of your and your family's ability to speak English. If we do, you and your family may have to sit tests and send us the results.

English language for family

Your partner and dependent children aged 16 or older must speak English or pay for classes to learn English in New Zealand.

There are 3 ways your partner and dependent children aged 16 or older can show us they speak English — through:

  • their citizenship, where they studied and the qualifications they gained
  • English language tests
  • paying for English language lessons.

The results of their English language test must:

  • meet the minimum score we set
  • be no more than 2 years old when you apply.

Check if you have enough points to be invited to apply. You need 6 points in total. You still need to meet all requirements and provide evidence in your visa application.

Documents you need

When you submit your expression of interest

When you submit your expression of interest you do not need to provide any documents, but you will need to provide details about how you, and anyone you are including, meet the requirements.

When you apply for your residence visa

If you are invited to apply for residence, you will need to provide:

  • a copy of your passport or
  • 1 acceptable photo
  • evidence of a chest X-ray
  • evidence of a medical examination
  • police certificates
  • evidence that you qualify for the points you are claiming
  • evidence that you can speak and understand English
  • evidence you have a job offer or already work with an accredited employer — and that you meet the other requirements for the skilled job
  • translated versions of all your documents if they are not in English.

If you are including your partner and dependent children, provide:

  • documents to show your relationship with them
  • proof of their identity and acceptable photos
  • police certificates, if required
  • evidence of chest X-rays and medical examinations, if required
  • evidence they can speak English or have paid for English language lessons.

 

After you apply

After you apply, we may contact you and ask for:

  • your original passport or
  • more evidence such as bank statements or pay slips showing your salary payments, if not already provided
  • more evidence of your ability to speak and understand English
  • an interview.

    Step 1: Submit your expression of interest

    Check you can claim enough points to submit an expression of interest (EOI).

    If you need to get an International Qualification Assessment (IQA), apply for an assessment and provide your IQA reference number in your EOI.

    To submit an EOI, log in to your account or set up an account if you do not have one already. 

    You can then fill in your EOI. There is no fee to submit an EOI.

    You do not have to complete the form all at once. You can save what you have done at any time and come back later.

    Step 2: Check if you have an invitation to apply

    After you submit your EOI, we will let you know immediately if you meet the requirements. 

    If you meet the requirements, you can continue on to the application form. We will also we will email you an invitation to apply (ITA) with further information.

    You have 4 months to complete your application for a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa from the date of your invitation. 

    Note

    If you do not apply within 4 months, you must submit a new EOI.

    Step 3: Gather your documents, if you are invited to apply

    The section 'Who can apply' explains the requirements for this visa and what you will need as proof.

    Get documents translated

    For your application you must provide:

    • certified English translations of any documents that are not in English
    • copies of the original documents.

    Documents must be translated by someone who meets our requirements for providing English translations.

     

    Organise proof of identity, citizenship and age

    If you, or your family if they are included, need a new passport, allow enough time to get it.

    When you apply, make sure you enter your identity details exactly as they appear on your passport or certificate of identity.

    If there are any mistakes in your identity details, your application will be delayed. We may also decline your application or refuse you entry to New Zealand.

    Make sure your photos are acceptable for a New Zealand visa.

     

    Organise proof for your partner and dependent children, if required

    If you are including your partner and dependent children in your application, get documents that show your relationship with them and proof of their identity.

    Book medical appointments, if required

    If you have determined you, and your family if included, need chest X-rays or medical examinations, you will need to book appointments.

    To complete your application, you will need to provide the:

    • reference code from the clinic submitting your health information
    • name of the clinic submitting your health information, if there is no eMedical reference code, or
    • medical certificate, chest X-ray certificate, or both if the clinic gave these to you.

    Note

    Evidence of a chest X-ray or medical examination must be less than 3 months old when we receive them. Allow yourself enough time to get these.

    Apply for police certificates, if required

    Check what you will need to include for a residence visa.

    If you have determined you need police certificates, you will need to provide them with your application.

    Note

    Your police certificates must be less than 6 months old when you submit your application. Allow yourself enough time to get these certificates.

    Organise evidence of your job or job offer

    Gather evidence that you meet the requirements for your skilled job.

    Ask your accredited employer for documents that show your hours, duration of employment, position and pay of your job. These can include your employment agreement or job offer.

    If you are a contractor, get a copy of your contract or contracts, your history of contract work, and evidence you have 12 months of skilled work experience in New Zealand.

    Gather evidence to show you qualify for the points you are claiming.

    Proof of qualifications

    If you are claiming points from your qualification, you will need evidence of your qualifications. If you do not have evidence, ask your education provider about how to get it.

    If you need an  for your overseas qualification, allow yourself enough time to get one.

    If you are claiming points from your occupational registration, gather evidence that confirms the registration authority and name of your registration.

    You must also show that you meet the other requirements to claim points for your occupational registration.

    If you are claiming points from your income, get copies of your employment agreement and job description to show you meet the pay rate requirements.

    Proof of skilled work experience in New Zealand

    If you are claiming points for skilled work experience, get evidence to show you met the pay rate requirements at the beginning of the skilled work experience period — and at the end of the work experience period if you are also claiming points for income.

    Get copies of your previous and current employment agreements and job descriptions. If you are a contractor, also get an income summary or tax statement from Inland Revenue.

    Organise evidence of English language ability

    Organise evidence of citizenship, study and qualifications, or English language test results.

    If you are including family members and they do not meet the English requirements, you will need to buy English language lessons for them to learn in New Zealand. You can choose to buy lessons in your visa application form. We will let you know how to pay for the lessons after you apply.

    Step 4: Submit your application and pay the fee

    To apply online, click on the link in your invitation to apply (ITA).

    You will need to log into your account, if you are not already logged in.

    You can then fill in your application, upload your documents and pay the applicable fees.

    You can save your application at any time and come back later.

    You must submit your application and pay the fee within 4 months of receiving your invitation to apply. If you do not do this, you will need to submit a new EOI.

    Step 5: Wait for our decision

    We will let you know if we need more information to process your application.

    Note

    If you are already in New Zealand, you must have a valid visa. If you think your current visa may expire while you are waiting for our decision on your resident visa application, you should also apply for a temporary visa to work, study or visit.

    When you apply for a temporary visa, we can give you an Interim Visa if your current visa expires while your application is being processed. This will let you stay in New Zealand lawfully.

    If you have applied for a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa after October 2023 and you have not applied for a new temporary visa, we may give you a Skilled Migrant Category Interim Visa instead of an Interim Visa.

    Step 6: Check your application status

    Log in to your account to check the status of your application.

    If we approve your application, we will give you an eVisa and send you a copy.

How to pay and submit

When you get your visa

You must come to New Zealand within 12 months of the date your visa is issued, if you applied for your visa outside of New Zealand.

When you arrive

Entry permission

You must apply for permission to enter New Zealand. You do this by completing a New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) form.

You can start your digital declaration any time, but the earliest you can submit it is 24 hours before starting your travel to New Zealand.

A paper declaration form is available for travellers who cannot complete it online.

Arriving in New Zealand

Alert

You can be refused entry permission if you:

  • do not meet our character requirements
  • have had a change in circumstances since we issued your visa
  • refuse to let us take your photo, fingerprints or an iris scan.

While you are in New Zealand

Your visa conditions are recorded in your eVisa.

Your resident visa allows you to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely.

Travel

You can travel in and out of New Zealand as many times as you like until your travel conditions expire.

Your travel conditions expire 2 years from:

  • the date you first arrive in New Zealand as a resident, or
  • the date your visa is given, if you are already in New Zealand.

To travel after that, you need to:

  • get a Permanent Resident Visa, or
  • extend your travel conditions, which would let you return to New Zealand at a later date.

With a Permanent Resident Visa, you can travel in and out of New Zealand indefinitely, as long as you keep your visa in a valid passport.

If your passport expires, you must apply to transfer your visa to a new passport before you can travel.

If you are outside of New Zealand when your travel conditions expire, your visa will expire as well.

Work

You can work in any job for any employer in New Zealand.

Study

You can study anywhere in New Zealand for any length of time.

Section 49 conditions

are extra conditions we may give to some visas, under section 49(1) of the Immigration Act 2009.

If your Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa has section 49 conditions, they will be listed in your eVisa.

Check or change your resident visa conditions

Alert

You must not be unemployed for more than 3 months. If you lose your job, you must get another skilled job that is for at least 3 months to meet your section 49 conditions.

If you do not, we may cancel your visa and you must leave the country.

Staying longer

Getting a Permanent Resident Visa

After you have had a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa for 2 years in a row, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa.

With a Permanent Resident Visa, you can travel in and out of New Zealand indefinitely, as long as you keep your visa in a valid passport.

Removing section 49 conditions

If you have and want to apply for a Permanent Resident Visa, you must:

  1. meet your section 49 conditions, then
  2. apply to have them removed.

To remove section 49 conditions, you — the main applicant or   — will need to provide the following:

  • a cover letter asking Immigration New Zealand to remove your section 49 conditions and including all your current contact details
  • copies of valid passports for you and everyone included on your Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa application
  • a letter from your employer, printed on company letterhead paper that:
    • confirms your position and that you have been in employment for the period required by your section 49 conditions
    • shows the contact details of the company
    • is dated and signed by a person authorised to confirm the status of your employment
  • copies of 2 recent payslips and a recent bank statement confirming your employment, or a summary of earnings from the Inland Revenue.

There is no cost for removing section 49 conditions.

Getting citizenship

For most people, after 5 years of living in New Zealand as a resident, you may be able to get New Zealand citizenship. You do not need a Permanent Resident Visa first.
