E2.5 Who needs a temporary visa or permit

A person who is not a New Zealand citizen and who wishes to stay temporarily in New Zealand must have a temporary visa to travel to New Zealand and a temporary permit to stay in New Zealand, unless they are exempt from having to hold a temporary visa or permit or hold a limited purpose visa or permit.

Note: Special requirements for Greek Passport holders
From 1 January 2007 the only Greek passports acceptable for travel are those issued on and after 1 January 2006 (see A2.10.50). Nevertheless, from 1 January 2007 any person with a temporary visa in a Greek passport which was issued before 1 January 2006, regardless of the date of expiry of the passport, will be permitted to travel to New Zealand between 1 January 2007 and 31 March 2007 if the visa they hold entitles them to a permit of 6 months or more.

On and after 1 April 2007 holders of Greek passports issued before 1 January 2006 with temporary visas will not be able to travel to New Zealand.

Effective 15/12/2006
