U3.1 Summary (01/04/2004)
  1. Unless otherwise specified, to be issued with a student visa or granted a student permit to attend a course of more than three months, applicants must :
    1. have an offer of a place in an approved course with an education provider in New Zealand that meets policy requirements (see U5.1 and U3.5), and
    2. be exempted from or have paid course fees, and
    3. have a guarantee of accommodation (see U3.15), and
    4. meet the conditions set out in U2.10.
  2. All applicants must meet the requirements under Generic Temporary Entry policy for:
    1. lodging an application for a temporary entry visa or permit as set out at E4, and
    2. bona fide applicants as set out at E5, and
    3. health and character as set out at E6.
  3. Educational institutions may provide evidence that applicants have met the requirements in the template 'Offer of a place to a foreign student' (see U3.5), which may be amended to meet the needs of the issuing institution.

U3.1.1 Health requirements

  1. Applicants for student visas or permits who intend to be in New Zealand for more than 6 months, up to a total of 24 months, and who come within the provisions of E6.1(b), must undergo a TB screening X-ray examination and provide a completed NZIS Temporary X-ray Certificate Form (NZIS 1096), unless E6.1(c) or E6.1(d) apply."
  2. All persons who intend to stay in New Zealand for a total of more than 24 months must undergo a medical and X-ray examination.
  3. (Pregnant women and children under 12 years of age are not required to have an X-ray examination unless E6.1(e) applies.)
  4. Persons who intend to stay in New Zealand for a total of more than 24 months include those applying for student visas or permits for courses of study that are longer in total than 24 months.
