V3.50 Operation Deep Freeze and other Antarctic travellers
Immigration Act 1987 s 35A
- People travelling between mainland New Zealand and the Ross Dependency are regarded for immigration purposes as domestic travellers.
- Operation Deep Freeze and other travellers to the Antarctic are not required to hold permits while in the Ross Dependency, but they do require a permit when they arrive in New Zealand unless they are exempt from having to hold a permit while in New Zealand.
- Officers with Schedule 2 delegations and above at the NZIS Christchurch office may grant visitors' permits to such travellers on arrival in New Zealand.
- Applicants may be granted a permit for a maximum of 3 months over the normal time permitted for visitors to New Zealand (see V2.5.1(a)), and applicants must meet the policy requirements for a visitor permit (see V2.1), except that the fee is waived.
