W6.10 Japan-New Zealand Working Holiday Scheme (01/07/2001)
- This scheme allows young Japanese citizens to undertake casual employment in New Zealand to supplement their funds during their holiday by issuing them with work visas authorising a permit for a maximum of 12 months.
- To be eligible for a work visa under this scheme, an applicant must:
- be resident in Japan at the time of applying, and
- provide evidence of onward travel and maintenance and accommodation, and
- have a minimum of NZ$4200 available funds for maintenance during their first 6 months in New Zealand.
- A successful applicant may be issued with a single or multiple journey visa, endorsed as follows:
- 'New Zealand/Japan Working Holiday Scheme' and 'Funds Varied'
- As: 'employee'
- For: 'for any employer'
- At: 'for any area'.
- The work permit is granted on arrival in New Zealand on condition that the holder:
- does not work for the same employer for more than 3 months, and
- does not undertake permanent or long-term employment unless they apply for and obtain a permit that enables this as provided by W6.5.1, and
- is not eligible to come to New Zealand for a further working holiday under this scheme, and
- may undertake English language studies for up to 3 months at a private college or technical institute, provided that they attend the course on a full-fee basis.
