W3.30 Medical and dental trainees (26/07/1999)
- Overseas medical or dental students may apply to come to New Zealand on an elective (a compulsory part of their practical training), and work visas may be issued to authorise such employment for the length of the elective, up to a maximum of 6 months.
- Medical and dental trainees are not required to obtain registration from the Medical or Dental Councils in order to undertake an elective.
- Holders of visitors' or students' permits are not eligible for work permits enabling them to undertake a medical or dental elective.
- Visa and immigration officers must sight and be satisfied with:
- evidence of the medical and dental trainees' qualifications and experience, and
- a letter of acceptance from a New Zealand hospital.
